Hi friends!

I hope I find you well today! I see it's been over eight months since I've sent out a mailing list notice! Yikes! It's been a busy time. I just came off of a year long hiatus from facebook, which really refreshed me artistically. In addition to focusing on new instruments like mandolin, piano and cajon, I've learned how to paint, and have been enjoying the cathartic process of expressing myself in that new way. But it's good to be back in the world of social media, and I can sense I'm coming onto another period of time where I am thinking about the business aspects of my career, but I am so grateful for the little breath and reset I was able to take the last eight months. Here's one of the paintings I made this winter - it's of Justin Evan Thompson and I singing together last year at the West End Art Depot in Las Cruces. It's a watercolor, and in real life it's very small.

One funny thing about this paining is that if you look really close, Justin has no legs. I guess I just forgot. :) If you don't know Justin, I'll tell you a little bit about him. Justin Thompson is a wonderful musician originally from Albuquerque, NM. He's a really talented writer, and this month he's running a kickstarter campaign to fund his debut record. (I think you'll enjoy it. You can find his kickstarter campaign here .) Today I kicked to the campaign, and if you do too (mention my name) I'll match your donation! I really really believe in this songwriter. His content and poetry is rich like Towns Van Zandt or John Prine or Bob Dylan. For example, some lyrics of his from a song about, among other things, coming home from a combat tour in Iraq:

When space and time crash in on themselves like a roaring rushing wave
and you hold on tight until you find that today has been replaced with yesterday

you may find yourself in a place you once were, in a place you never meant to stay
you may find yourself like a second chance that has washed up upon the bank

And the sun may rise in the west where it fell and set in the east tonight
and love once lost is love not yet found like an unopened letter like an unfought fight

You may find yourself with the one you once loved, in a place you once loved to be.
You may find yourself like an unopened letter, like a sun that is traveling from West to East.
A
nd the wave will bring you home, the wave did bring me home.

And when the East Wind leaves and at last returns it lingers in familiar wings,
and when the East Wind blows through her long black hair every ghost has an anthem to sing.

Back in Gabrielle Louise land, I have a fun House Concert coming up on Saturday, in Tuscon, AZ. It's called Oro Valley House Concerts, and the show is a double bill with Ky Burt. I've only been to Tuscon a couple of times. The first of those I actually lived there - when I was about five, my parents attending to my grandmother who had cancer at the time. I can't bring to mind much about the experience except some flashbulb memories like riding a pony for the first time and a spooky Halloween walk with illuminated cacti and some sacred stones.  The second time I went to Tuscon was after my father had passed away, and I went to a moccasin maker who had custom made some moccasins he'd worn most his life. The man measured my feet and I ordered a matching pair. Unfortunately they never arrived despite several phone calls and emails. So, my third trip to Tuscon our little troupe of performers plans to revisit his shop posing as the musical mafia. Wish us success collecting my boots. :) The details for the show on Saturday are:

I'm excited for this performance because I haven't been playing a ton of live shows. However, the few I have played this fall have been really special. I'm attaching a couple of videos with some new content. The first video was sent to me from my friends in Argentina at LIT Productions. They had some extra footage of a shoot we did last Spring and put together this scene of me performing "Alice" by Tom Waits in someone's living room in Buenos Aires. It was a relaxed night. We had pizza and wine. We also filmed "If the Static Clears" this evening, which I sent out a while back.

The second video is from September. I really enjoyed playing Mountain Harvest Festival this year with a trio of great friends supporting me on stage. Everyone took turns playing instruments, but mostly Brodie Kinder played cajon and Mel Williams played Bass. Justin played additional guitars and mandolin, and everyone sang wonderful vocal harmonies. We edited down this video compilation of the set, a sort of montage from the show. It's essentially "A Concert in Fifteen Minutes." Check it out!

After the show in Tuscon, I'm on tour til the end of the month, but for all the folling gigs I'm playing in support of Justin's show. It's been really fun to learn all of his songs, and how to back them up on Mandolin, Keyboard, Guitar, and percussion. I am being stretched and pushed and find myself growing in enumerable ways. Last night we played two shows in one night! One at a wine bar from 6 to 8, and then a second directly afterwards at a coffee/house concert hall just two blocks away. It was surreal to cart all the instruments down two blocks and simply start again. Ky Burt from Flagstaf, AZ is opening up or double billing many of the shows. It's a fun little crew to be on the road with.

You can follow the tour progress at Justin's facebook page, www.facebook.com/justinthompsonnm.

Thanks for tuning in!
