Photo By Art Heffron, Beth Wood and I at Songbirds Festival
Good Morning, Good Morning, Friends! Those new, Welcome!
Friday, August 27th, on a stage framed by two gigantic crystal chandeliers, amidst a labyrinthine arrangement of architectural antiques, David and I will perform original music from the new record, Mirror the Branches.
After the 90-minute musical performance, the magnificent space will transform into an Argentine Tango Milonga (social dance) complete with knock-out performances by Tango al Dente. The $15 suggested donation covers guests for the entire evening, whatever they choose to attend: the concert, the dance, and a beginner tango lesson at intermission.
We plan to play the CD live for you, like I did at Dazzle, except David's now got parts on almost every song. We've even worked up a few new Leonard Cohen covers that could sneak into the milonga portion of the night. Tom Waits, too!
Thanks to Art Heffron, I've got a photo to prove to you how beautiful Eron Johnson's Warehouse is, because I recently played there as a part of the Songbirds Festival. That's Beth Wood, Me, Stephanie Maybe, Ayo Awosika, Lara Ruggles, and Megan Burtt. We had a hell of a time.
I want to thank you guys so much for your generous support by pre-ordering the new CD. Your hard copy can either be picked up at the big CD Release Fiesta, or it will be mailed to you on August 28th, the next day.(You can still pre-order here, then you could have all the lyrics memorized before coming, so you can sing WITH me! Es mi cosa favorita en todo el mundo!)
I've decided to print the classic poems that inspired me when I was writing the songs, instead of printing my lyrics in the insert. One such poem is called Everyone Sang. It kind of reminds me of Songbirds! I'll print it here:
Everyone suddenly burst out singing;
And I was filled with such delight
As prisoned birds must find in freedom,
Winging wildly across the white
Orchards and dark-green fields; on--on--and out of sight.
Everyone's voice was suddenly lifted;
And beauty came like the setting sun:
My heart was shaken with tears; and horror
Drifted away . . . O, but Everyone
Was a bird; and the song was wordless; the singing will never be done.
April 1919, Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967)
